SHILAJIT - The Wonder Medicine of Ayurved

Shilajit is considered one of the wonder medicines of Ayurveda. Neither a plant nor animal substance, it is a mineral pitch that oozes from the rocks of the Himalayas, as they become warm in the summer months. It is said to carry the healing power of these great mountains . Shilajit is an important drug of the ancient Hindu material medica and is to this day used extensively by the Hindu physicians for a variety of diseases. Early ayurvedic writings from the Caraka Samhita and Susruta Samhita describe shilajit as a cure for all disease as well as a rasayana (rejuvenative) able to increasing longevity from 100 to 1000 years of age.

The near miraculous powers of Shilajit was always known to enlightened masters, ayurvedic doctors, yogis and mystics of Nepal since thousands of years. They considered Shilajit as a divine gift from God and a nectar that can heal and prevent all the ailments of body and mind. SHILAJIT as A Medicine for General Well Being

Shilajit, an ancient traditional medicine has been ascribed a number of pharmacological activities and has been used for ages as a rejuvenator and for treating a number of disease conditions. 

Anti-inflammatory activity: Orally administered Shilajit (50 mg/kg) induced significant anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan induced pedal oedema.

Analgesic activity: Shilajit was found to have analgesic activity (relief from pain) in the dose of 200mg/kg.

Immunomodulatory: It was found that the white blood cell activity was increased by shilajit extract. The observed activity increased as the dose of shilajit extract and time of exposure was increased. Shilajit boosts immunity and resistance to various diseases.

Nootropic activity: It was found that processed shilajit and its active constituents significantly increased the learning acquisition and memory retention. Shilajit is perhaps the best natural smart drug, memory enhancer, neuro enhancer, cognitive enhancer, and intelligence enhancer. Shilajit's role in prevention and reversal of Alzheimer's disease is well documented and researched.

Anti-anxiety effect: Shilajit at a dose of 10 mg/kg, has significant anti-anxiety activity as proved by elevated plus-maze test which is comparable to that of diazepam

Anti-ulcer effect: Shilajit pretreatment at the dose of 100mg/kg orally reduced ulcer index in immobilization and aspirin induced gastric ulcers. In duodenal ulcers also, Shilajit pretreatment significantly reduced the incidence.

Antiviral activity: Shilajit is endowed with both immunopotentiating and viral load reducing properties.

Free radical scavenging and antioxidant effect:  Shilajit shown free radical scavenging & antioxidant effect against SO3 (sulfur trioxide free radical), OH (hydroxyl radical) and paramagnetic nitric oxide (NO) depending on the concentration of Shilajit. The antioxidant effects were concentration dependent. Higher concentrations of processed shilajit provided greater free radical protection.
